Unique Stays

South Korea has gone through much change in a relatively short period of time. As a result, there are diverse forms of architecture in present-day Korea. In one city block, you can see traditional Korean, post-war utilitarian, and the most modern architectural styles. Given the diversity, you can find all sorts of accommodations.

Hanoks are built from natural materials like stone, wood, and clay.

Modern hanoks continue to be built today using traditional techniques and modern tools.

Traditional Korean houses called hanok have a very distinct look and a long history. To build a hanok, first timber frames are raised on stone foundations, Then the walls are constructed by filling in the spaces between the frames with straw and dirt. And finally, the roof is tiled with the trademark clay tiles called giwa.

Hanoks also utilize a uniquely Korean heating system called ondol, in which smoke from the cooking hearth is channeled under a stone subfloor. Heated by waste heat and smoke, the stone subfloor retains warmth throughout the night. Even today, apartments are built with modernized ondol systems, which use hot water pipes in place of smoke flues.

There are a variety of hanoks from modest to lavish that can be identified by the roofing material. Thatched roof hanoks are humble and they can be found in preserved traditional villages. Conversely, the upper classes lived in hanoks with tile roofs.

Some hanok houses have been renovated into accommodations for travelers looking for a unique experience. The luxurious hanok houses offer modern comfort while retaining the hanok style. The traditional exteriors give a sense of history, yet they offer all the amenities the modern traveler needs.

A night in a hanok is a special experience but they’re scarce. So many travelers choose to stay at accommodations called pensions. They are favored by domestic travelers due to their proximity to tourist attractions and amenities like pools, outdoor grills, and kitchens.

Besides pensions, there are other residential homes that have been converted into accommodations. These offer more unique experiences for travelers. By staying at these accommodations, guests can enjoy all the comforts of a residential home and enjoy a more relaxing trip.
