Hanoks also utilize a uniquely Korean heating system called ondol, in which smoke from the cooking hearth is channeled under a stone subfloor. Heated by waste heat and smoke, the stone subfloor retains warmth throughout the night. Even today, apartments are built with modernized ondol systems, which use hot water pipes in place of smoke flues.
There are a variety of hanoks from modest to lavish that can be identified by the roofing material. Thatched roof hanoks are humble and they can be found in preserved traditional villages. Conversely, the upper classes lived in hanoks with tile roofs.
