Nature
One of the best ways to experience Korea’s natural wealth is hiking. Hiking is quite possibly the most popular recreational activity in Korea. At all four seasons of the year, there’s always something to see on the trails. In the spring there’s cherry blossoms, in the summer there’s greenery, the fall brings autumn leaves, and in the winter the mountains are covered in quiet snow.
There are many scenic landscapes as the peninsula is very mountainous and surrounded by the sea.
As hiking is very popular, well-maintained trails can be found all over the country.
Many hiking trails and national parks are easily accessible from urban centers. This accessibility makes hiking a fantastic way for urban dwellers to de-stress with some outdoor recreation. Some mountains, like Bukhansan in Seoul, are located right in the center of the city and hikers can take a city bus to a trailhead for a quick hike.
Koreans generally hike with friends and family. Some also choose to join hiking clubs that organize hiking trips nationwide. Although hiking is more popular with the older generations, many young people can be seen on the trails as well.
Hiking is an all-day activity, and socializing is an important part of it. Along the trails, you’ll see groups of people picnicking in clearings and by streams. There is much camaraderie between hikers and people will often offer food and drink to others resting nearby. After they finish hiking, groups continue the festivities at restaurants near the foot of the mountains.
With Korea’s rich history, there are historic site trails that are excellent ways to spend a day. Buddhist temples are commonly located in the mountains and some of the best-known temples are situated on the mountainsides of the highest mountains. These ancient Buddhist temples make excellent places to take a break while hiking. Hikers can look around, have a snack and refill their water bottles from the temples’ wells.
As Korea is surrounded by the sea, there are many seaside hiking opportunities. The island of Jeju is unique in that one can experience both mountain and seaside hiking trails which drape over mountains, hills, and beaches.
The sheer number of trails and variety of terrains in Korea means that there’s always a trail for everyone. However, some routes may start gentle but eventually lead to very steep and challenging climbs. No matter the trail however, hikers will be surrounded by beautiful greenery and views.
